Hsu-Chong Yeh, MD, of San Mateo, CA, passed away on January 9, 2023 at age 85
Hsu-Chong was born on April 3rd, 1937 in Taipei, Taiwan. Having grown up in Japan-occupied Taiwan, he was fluent in Taiwanese, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese. After graduating from National Taiwan University Medical College, he immgrated to Campbellton, NB, Canada and married his wife Cha-pying. He trained as a general practitioner at Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, and then later studied at McGill University where he completed his training as a radiologist, specializing in the emerging field of Diagnostic Ultrasound in Montreal General Hospital
Hsu-Chong then moved to New York City, where he practiced at Mt Sinai Medical Center for over 40 years until he retired at the age of 77. While there, he was promoted to professor in 1986. While at Mt Sinai, he was a pioneer in the field of ultrasound. He published over 100 research papers and books and chapters. His work included many of the foundational ultrasound signs of early pregnancy, and liver, adrenal, thyroid and pancreatic imaging. His publications described new radiological signs, classifications of disease, and clarified misconceptions of medical imaging. Dr. Yeh enjoyed creating his own illustrations for his scientific publications. Dr. Yeh's students included radiology residents and fellows in the United States as well as international radiology specialists who would travel to spend up to a year studying with him. He lectured at the major ultrasound societies, and was regularly invited to teach internationally including in Taiwan, China, and South Korea.
His hobbies included running, which included wind sprints and was part of his daily routine for over 50 years up until 2 months before his passing. He also enjoyed listening to classical music, drawing and painting, Chinese caligraphy and alternative health. Prior to his late 70's he enjoyed traveling.
Hsu-chong is survived by his wife, Cha-pying, sons David and Benjamin, their spouses Xiao and Jane, and 5 grandsons
