Winton N. Petersen, 99, died May 4, 2021. Winton was born in Iron River, WI on January 21, 1922. He moved to The Villages in 2005. He served with the 286th Engineer Combat Battalion during WWII entering service as a draftee in 1942 and discharged in 1946 as a First Lieutenant. He was awarded medals for the American Campaign, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign and Rhineland-Central Europe with two battle stars. In 2012 he received a medal as Knight of Legion of Honor from the Republic of France for combat duty on French soil from the Normandy invasion to the end of the war in Germany. Vocations of his life included that of a bakery/restaurant owner, city bus driver and worker at the USPS where he retired in 1984. He is the author of two published books. His main hobbies were camping, travel and Big Band music. He also loved to play on a keyboard that he learned to play at 85.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years Mary Jane, his son Mark Petersen, and four daughters, Jeannine Kline, Janet White (Kevin), Kristen Chilson (Rick), Annette Worley(Scott), and 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
A military memorial will be held at a later date at the National Cemetery in Bushnell FL.
