Winnifred Gladys (York) Zappala, 87, formerly of Hanover, NH, died peacefully surrounded by family on January 10, 2021 at Bay Square at Yarmouth.
Winnie was born October 8, 1933, in Plymouth, NH, the daughter of Alexander and Ethel (Tibbetts) York. She graduated from Plymouth High School in 1951 and went on to earn her nursing degree from the Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing in 1954. She worked as a registered nurse in Washington, DC, for a couple of years and in 1956 married Dominick J. Zappala, co-owner of Serry's, Inc., and moved to Hanover where she lived for the next 62 years. Winnie put her nursing career on hold to raise her three children and later worked as the office manager for Dr. Richard D. Brannen, OD. She volunteered countless hours in the Hanover school system, Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, Montshire Museum of Science, The Hanover Lions Club, Howe Library and at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Memorial Hospital Medical Center's information desk and Pink Smock gift shop, earning her the distinction of "Volunteer Emeritus" for her service and lasting contribution.
She was an outdoor enthusiast and a member of the Outdoor Recreation for Seniors (ORFS) group and hiked, cross-country skied and kayaked many trails and lakes in the Upper Valley and beyond. Winnie enjoyed golfing with Dom on a summer evening at the Hanover Country Club and entertaining family and friends at their camp on Lake Mascoma.
Winnie is preceded by her beloved husband Dominick J. Zappala. She is survived by her two sons, Tim Zappala and his wife Judy of Sunapee, NH; and Brian Zappala and his wife Elaine of Freeport, ME; her daughter, Karen Gottschalk and her husband Steve of Orinda, CA; her sister, Rosemary E. York of Yarmouth, ME; 3 grandsons (Andrew, Greyson and Ryan), 2 granddaughters (Sarah and Alexis), 3 great-grandchildren (Madison, Emily and Rory) and many nieces and nephews.
Winnie will always be remembered by her family, her neighbors on Sargent Street, and the Hanover community for her beautiful smile, positive attitude and loving heart.
A private service will be held this summer. A contribution in her memory may be made to the Montshire Museum of Science, 1 Montshire Rd, Norwich, VT 05055 (https://www.montshire.org/support/make-a-gift) or to a charity of one's choice.
