Fun-loving, funny, smart, beautiful inside and out, and with a mischievous personality that matched the natural auburn hair of her youth, Windy Gale Elrod blew into the lives of those who knew and loved her like a “gale force wind.” She had a zest for life and a wanderlust that drove her to conquer numerous new adventures, new challenges, and new places, and “collect” many interesting and diverse people along the way. She loved animals, the beach, flamingos, travel, and getting a good deal on anything.
A vivacious and popular cheerleader at Towers High School in Decatur, GA, she earned a Business Education degree at Jacksonville State University in Alabama where she was a member and officer of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity and a little sister for Pi Kappa Phi. Upon graduation, she taught school for several years and attained a master’s degree at the University of Georgia.
She left the Atlanta area, moved to Richmond, VA, and started a new career in the cosmetics industry where her creativity and people skills were put to great use. Her spirit of adventure and yearn to travel eventually led to a career with United Airlines as a Flight Attendant, allowing her to see the world and reside in exciting cities such as New York and Chicago.
Moving back to the Atlanta area for family obligations, she finally retired from flying and turned to another love—rescuing animals. Throughout the years, she nurtured many of her own, and loved and fostered many others for Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue and Gwinnett County Humane Society. We take comfort that she’s frolicking in Heaven with Gigi, M&M, Murphy, BooBoo, Chalk, Prissy (and many others), and that we will join her when the Lord calls us all home.
Preceded in death by her parents Mirian Nichols Elrod and Jack T. Elrod, she is survived by cousins Mary Ann Wellman (Jim), Bobbie Schaad (Johnny), Jay Schaad, and Joy Schaad Davis (Mark), her three roommates and lifelong college friends Deborah J. Thompson, Sonja P. Roberts, and Kathy Y. Chapman, as well as numerous friends scattered all over the globe. The light is a little dimmer in the world today with her no longer in it, and she will be greatly missed.
Her memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 28, 2022, at 3:00 p.m. at Byrd & Flanigan Funeral Home at 288 Hurricane Shoals Road NE; Lawrenceville, GA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the rescue groups YTNR (yorkierescue.com) and Gwinnett Humane Society (gwinnetthumane.com).
