Wilton Graham Taylor, 83, a compassionate advocate for others, peacefully passed away on May 9, 2024, in Ashburn, Va, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 25, 1940, in Newport News, Va, to Wilton Earl and Isabel Hammel Christian Taylor, he leaves behind a profound legacy of care and dedication. His commitment to serving others and nurturing his faith community extended beyond the boundaries of his personal life, shaping every aspect of his existence.
Graham's career was marked by exceptional leadership and groundbreaking innovations in the field of social work. While he had a track record of successes throughout his career his proudest accomplishments were his pioneering efforts overhauling Virginia's adoption program and serving as a key figure in the development of the Bureau of Child Protective Services program, which served as a national model. Graham's work earned him countless accolades, but he remained humble, always focusing on the greater good of the community.
Even in retirement, Graham's dedication to service remained steadfast. He dedicated immeasurable hours to various initiatives throughout the Winchester, Va area, most notably at Opequon Presbyterian Church. From leading efforts for the Winchester Area Temporary Transitional Shelter (WATTS) program to working in the community garden and supporting area food pantries, he tirelessly continued to help those in need. He also served faithfully as an Elder and a Deacon at Opequon, embodying his deep-rooted faith in every aspect of his life.
Graham is preceded in death by his cherished wife of over 45 years, Marie Arnette Taylor, whose love, and partnership were the cornerstone of his life's journey. Together, they nurtured a family filled with love and devotion, raising their children with unwavering support and guidance. He is also preceded in death by his beloved daughter Melanie Jane Taylor, granddaughter Claire Taylor Myers and brother Robert Wayne Taylor.
Graham is survived by his daughter Jaclyn Taylor Myers (David), grandchildren Courteney Myers Knoll (Jordan), Caroline Elizabeth Myers, and Taylor David Myers, and great-granddaughter Hazel Marie Knoll. He is also survived by his siblings Dennis Taylor (Karla) and Sherrie Taylor Hemby (William).
A celebration of Graham's life will be held at Opequon Presbyterian Church in Winchester, Va on May 21, 2024, at 11:00 am. He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife Marie and daughter Melanie in Chester, Va, at a later date.
In honor of Graham's unwavering dedication to serving others and nurturing his faith community, memorial donations may be made to Opequon Presbyterian Church.
