Born in Joaquin, Shelby County, Texas to Bertha “Bertie” Scott and Alfred Joshua Truitt, Sr. His mother passed when he was four months old and his father married Ella Pinkston some months later. He grew up with two brothers and three sisters along with four half-brothers and two half-sisters. He voluntarily enlisted in the Regular Army April 2, 1918 at Jackson Barracks, Camp Beauregard, Louisiana serving with the Coastal Artillery Corps to honorable discharge December 18, 1918. He and wife Drury Kay Truitt had no children and they now rest in the Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Mount Lebanon, Bienville Parish, Louisiana.
