William E. Toner, Jr. 1943 - 2023 LONGMEADOW William E. Toner, Jr., 80, passed away unexpectedly on April 18, 2023 in Wellfleet, MA. He was born on January 18, 1943, to the late Helen M. and William E. Toner, Sr. in New Haven, CT. Known for his friendly, kind demeanor and zest for life, he was beloved by friends and family, and remembered by all who met him. Bill lived in Longmeadow for almost 70 years. He was proud to have been at the forefront of the running craze, completing his first NYC Marathon in 1977 and going on to qualify for and finish many Boston Marathons. A skilled sailor, Bill loved exploring Cape Cod's Wellfleet Harbor in his Rhodes 19. Stories of his maritime adventures were always entertaining. Bill was also an avid golfer at Longmeadow Country Club. A graduate of Longmeadow High School, Georgetown University, and Western New England College, Bill joined the Army in 1967 which included a tour in Vietnam, a time that taught him skills he used throughout his life. He spent 50 years as an independent insurance agent, retiring from Sumner and Toner Insurance Agency in Longmeadow in 2020. Well regarded in the business community, Bill's respect for others and his integrity were essential to the way he lived his life. Bill's faith was an important part of his identity; he was an active member of St. Mary Parish finance committee. He volunteered with SCORE, the small business mentoring organization. His memory was astonishing and he used this to his advantage when telling stories of his and others' adventures. He was an avid reader of current events and took great interest in world history. Bill was always quick to smile and loved life, whether he was sipping a pint with friends, sailing across Wellfleet Harbor, walking on the beach with his wife and their dog, telling stories of his time in the Army, or playing with his grandchildren. Bill will be remembered as a man of faith, family, community, and country. Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Caroline; his son John "Jack" Toner and his wife Elizabeth; his daughter Sarah Dugan and her husband Joseph; four grandchildren: John, Mae, Louisa, and Beatrice; his sister Mary Anne Wright; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Helen Wilkerson. Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, April 28, 2023 from 4 – 7 PM at Forastiere Smith Funeral & Cremation, 220 North Main Street, East Longmeadow. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Parish, 519 Longmeadow Street, Longmeadow, MA followed by committal services in Longmeadow Cemetery.
