William Bruce Taggart, 75, born January 10, 1947, in Columbus, IN, entered heaven's gate on June 2, 2022. His parents were Ralph and Patricia (Torrenga) Taggart.
He attended Columbus High School graduating in 1965 as an All-State Football Player. After one year at Indiana State University as a standout athlete, he enlisted in the Air Force and served 4 years. Thirteen months were served in Vietnam as a Crew Chief on C-130 transport planes. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Indiana State and completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in education and school administration. The love of his life, Linda, was by his side through it all. After meeting in high school, they were married on April 22, 1967, three weeks prior to leaving for Vietnam, always giving him something to dream about and fight for.
After the military, he began his teaching and coaching career in Clinton, IN where they welcomed their daughter Holly. During his career in Vandalia, IL as an educator and head coach of both football and wrestling, they welcomed their son Alex. Coach Taggart's next chapter was as a Sales Manager for Purina Mills. After various jobs in business, his career culminated as the Owner and President of TAG Industrial and Safety where he served until his last day, making connections with his beloved customers.
His reach was not limited to the business world. His humility and warm spirit turned strangers into instant friends, always creating a safe and welcoming environment that started with his smile. "It could always be worse" was his life's motto that he lived out daily as he quietly suffered through a myriad of health challenges. Never one to complain, he inspired others to be their best and live life to the fullest.
Although he might have been a second-string hunter, ATV driver, and technology whiz, he was a first-string consumer of Little Debbie's and donuts. His heart was devoted to his family and grew exponentially with the arrival of all his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda (Whitlow) Taggart of Nashville, IN; daughter Holly (Billy) Shrum and children Emily and John Bruce of Columbus, IN; and son Alex (Kari) and children Rhett William and Finley of Nashville, IN; sister Tracie (Sean) Cutrell of Columbus, IN; nephew Ryan Bruce and nieces Megan Johnson and Brooke Foster; their families; and close cousins. He was preceded in death by parents Ralph and Patricia Taggart; brother Kevin; and grandparents. He was a member of Westside Community Church (124 Tipton Lakes Blvd) where the services will be held.
A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, June 7 at 11 am at Westside Community Church. Friends may gather for visitation on Monday, June 6 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church. Additional visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
