Dr. William (Bill) Sidney Smith passed away on January 28, 2021, at the age of 89.
William is survived by his children, William S. Smith, Jr. and Caroline M. Smith, twin brother, Robert, sister, Angeline, and two grandchildren, Melody and Graham.
An Atlanta native, Bill was born November 22, 1931, graduating from Centennial High School in 1948. He proudly enlisted to serve his country in the United States Army from 1951 to 1954. Following an honorable discharge, Bill pursued his college degree from Georgia State University. Always striving to further his education, Bill supported himself through medical school at the Medical College of Georgia, after which he proceeded to do his internship and first year of residency at Georgia Baptist Hospital to become an otolaryngologist. His final three years of residency were completed at the Medical College of Georgia, including serving as Chief Resident in his final year. He served as a leader in his field, serving as Chairman of the Otolaryngology Department and President of the Medical Staff at Georgia Baptist and the Chief of Surgery at Paulding Memorial Hospital. In addition to his membership in numerous medical societies, he served as the President of the Medical Association of Atlanta and the Greater Atlanta Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Society. Bill also acted as a delegate to the Medical Association of Georgia and the American Medical Association. Most importantly, he was a loving and devoted father, brother, and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A private graveside service was held on January 30, 2021 at Arlington Cemetery in Atlanta. The family plans to hold a larger graveside service at a later date.
