William "Wayne" Serrett
May 13, 1944 -December 4, 2021
CHARLOTTE- Wayne Serrett, 77, died early Saturday morning at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC following an extended illness.
Mr. Serrett was born Saturday, May 13, 1944, in Durham, NC to the late George William and Dana (Quillen) Serrett.
As a child he grew up in Staunton, VA where he called home before moving to Charlotte, NC in 1960. "Wayne the Train" was a 1962 graduate of East Mecklenburg High School where he was recognized as an outstanding athlete in both football and track and held the state track title in the 100 & 220-yard dash. He had been recruited by many colleges for both sports but ultimately decided to go back home and play football for the University of Virginia. Mr. Serrett spent well over fifty years in the industrial tool and supply profession where he later owned his own company, The Waylin Corporation, for thirty years. His success was built on his extensive product knowledge and the relationships built with his many clients. He loved the beach, music, great movies, his workshop, and his beautifully manicured lawn. Many people have treasured items he had made for them over the years, including bird houses, corn holes, doll houses, furniture and many more items. His music catalog ranged from Willie Nelson to Luciano Pavarotti, and he was honored to have met the great tenor on several occasions.
He will be missed by his close friends at University City United Methodist Church and the "Huddle Up Group" who met every Tuesday morning to share and discuss the word of God. He would always insist that the group "study" the Bible and not just read the Bible. He was known for helping others and gave generously to many without wanting to be recognized for his good works. He adored his daughters and followed their careers throughout the years as they participated in many sporting events, but his pride and joy for the past 22 years has been that of his three granddaughters and their many accomplishments.
Mr. Serrett leaves to cherish his memory his loving daughter, Saundra Russ and her husband, Frank of Charlotte, NC; three granddaughters, Samantha Russ also of Charlotte and Parker and Paige Sylvester both of Alpharetta, GA; a sister, Sue Winfrey of Durham, NC and a brother, Robert Q. Serrett of Ashland, OR. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews and the mother of his children, Linda Serrett, along with his precious furry feline companion, Pickles. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Candace Sylvester and a brother, G. Thomas Serrett.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Serrett will be 11 o'clock Wednesday morning, December 22, 2021, at the University City United Methodist Church, 3835 West W.T. Harris Blvd., Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Lake Norman Community Health Clinic, (Lnchc.org) PO Box 2398, Huntersville, NC 28070 (The Clinic provides free medical care to the uninsured) or to the Hollow Creek Farm Equine and Canine Rescue, (hollowcreekfarm.org) 2763 Howells Ferry Road, Hickory Grove, SC 29717.
The family of Mr. Serrett wishes to personally thank the caring staff at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House. "We shall always be grateful for the kindness that was extended to our family during this most difficult and sad journey."
