William Albert Robinson, 88, of Cross Plains, TX, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 3, 2024.
William was born in Abilene, TX, in 1935, to Henry Dyrel and Emma Evelyn Robinson. His siblings included two older brothers, a fraternal twin brother, and an older sister who kept all the boys in line.
He wed the love of his life, Barbara Jeanette Slaughter, in 1957, and they enjoyed almost 67 years of marriage. Barbara said he never actually asked her to marry him. He just took her to the jewelry store so she could pick out a "good" set of rings. William and Barbara raised two daughters in Abilene. He was a devoted father and faithful husband.
William loved being with his family. He had a good sense of humor and enjoyed making others laugh. When the family was together, he liked playing dominoes, chess, or trying to score high in Scrabble with his hilarious made-up words. He also loved Westerns, especially the old black and white movies. He is the reason his daughters know how to fish, play poker and shoot guns.
William was a such generous man that you had to be careful expressing a need around him as he would quickly try to fulfill it. He loved working with his hands and being outdoors, and he could build or repair almost anything.
William was a hard-working man, and often worked multiple jobs to provide for his family. He started working at age 12 as a Milkman's Helper at Banner Dairy. Before joining the Army in 1957, he worked in the oilfields as a roughneck and for T&P Railroad. After being discharged from the Army, he worked in Abilene at Foremost Dairy, but most of his career was with Merchant's Fast Motor Lines as a line driver where he received several awards for safe driving. After retirement, he and Barbara moved to Cross Plains, and he drove a school bus for the Cross Plains School District.
William was a member of the Cross Plains Church of Christ in Cross Plains, TX.
William was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Evelyn Wells and his brother, Joel Robinson.
William is survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughter Jeanette LeVie and husband Donn of Austin, TX; his daughter Susan Thomas and husband Gary of Kyle, TX; his grandsons Nolan and Lane Thomas of Kyle, TX; his great grandson, Nero Turnbow-Thomas of Kyle, TX; his brother Raymond Robinson and wife Rita of Abilene, TX; his brother, Joseph Robinson of Katy, TX; his sister-in-law, Beth Slaughter of Ranger, TX; and many nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be 1:00pm to 3:00pm Wednesday, March 6 at Higginbotham Funeral Home, 309 N.E. 4th Street, Cross Plains, TX.
Graveside services will be at 1:00pm Thursday, March 7 at Hogan Cemetery in Groesbeck, TX with Richard Williams of Groesbeck Church of Christ, officiating.
