William Dennis McHugh, Director Emeritus of Eastman Dental Center and Professor Emeritus at the University of Rochester, died on October 6, 2022 in Vero Beach, FL.
Born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, England on May 8, 1929, he grew up in Scotland and graduated from St. Andrew's University Dental School in 1950. After two years' service as a Dental Officer in the Royal Air Force, he embarked on a career combining clinical practice, teaching and research. He was latterly Professor of Dental Health in the Universities of St. Andrews and Dundee.
In 1970, he and his family moved to Rochester, NY where he became Director of Eastman Dental Center and Professor and Associate Dean for Dental Affairs at the University of Rochester, positions he held until he retired in 1994. This was the original Eastman Center. Others were later established in London, Stockholm, Paris and Rome.
In 1994, he received the Distinguished Service Award of the National Institute of Lund in Sweden.
He was President of the British Society of Periodontology, President of the American Association of Dental Research, President of the International Association of Dental Research and Vice-President of the American Association of Dental Schools. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Fellow of the American College of Dentists, Fellow of the International College of Dentists and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
His first wife, Susan Mary McHugh, died in 2013. He was predeceased by his sister Jeanette R. McHugh (Jill Rothery) of Tamworth, England. He is survived by his beloved spouse Ann Evelyn Wheeler of Vero Beach, FL; his daughter Moira A. Douglas of Lake Worth, FL; his son, Alan N. C. McHugh (Jeanne M. Heffernan) of Tuxedo Park, NY and Vero Beach, FL; his grandchildren: David W. Douglas (Jacqueline Gersley) of Lake Worth, FL and Cordelia E. McHugh (Kevin Prindle) of Waterbury Center, VT; great grandson Bowen W. Prindle of Waterbury Center, VT; and in-laws, Eric and Margaret Rothchild of Seattle, WA.
A keen sportsman, he played rugby for many years, latterly for the North of Scotland, along with squash, tennis and golf.
The family will welcome friends on Monday, October 10, 2022 at 5pm at Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach, FL.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at 10am at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach, FL.
