William H. Green, 77, passed away at his home in Winters on October 16, 2021. He was born on July 5th, 1944 to Oliver and Ora Green in Winters, Texas.
He attended school in the Winters ISD from kindergarten through graduation. He graduated with the class of 1964 and developed many lifelong friendships along the way. A highlight of his high school career was playing on the 1962 Class 2A State Semifinalist football team. After high school, Willie was drafted into the army. He enlisted in July of 1965 and completed his basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana. After completion of basic training, he was sent to Korea on the USS Patrick to fulfil his obligation. He served as a member of the 2nd Infantry Division in Inchon, Korea. After serving 13 months overseas, Willie was sent to Fort Hood, Texas to complete his time. While in the army, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and an Expert Rifle medal. He finished his service on July 5, 1967.
Willie married the love of his life, Brenda Sue Proffitt Green on April 17, 1970, in Ballinger, Texas. Soon after, they moved to San Angelo, and he started working for Merchant's Motor Lines, where he drove a truck on many different routes in and around San Angelo. After 14 years, he took a job in Sterling City hauling crude oil for Permian Oil Transport for a couple years. Willie got back in the freight business in October of 1986 when he took a job with Big State in Abilene, Texas. This company transitioned into USF Bestway over the years. He drove back and forth from Winters to Abilene for 27 years doing this job. In 2013, he took a job with Dunagin Transport in Winters hauling water in the oilfield. After 3 years, he retired to spend more time at home with Brenda, so they could travel and watch grandkids participate in all of their activities.
Willie was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Ora Green, brothers-in-law Jerry Davis, Johnnie Decker, and B.J. Hinson. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Brenda Green, sons Bryan Green and wife Julie of Winters and Brent Green and wife Tammy of Littlefield; grandchildren Matthew Ingle and wife Natalie, Madison Ingle, Kade Green, Blake Green, Laken Green, and Brenton Green. He is also survived by his sisters Carolyn Davis, Kay Brown and husband Neil, his brother, Wayne Green and wife Dawn; sisters-in-law Dolores Hinson and Linda Decker, and brother-in-law Gary Proffitt and wife, Wilmalene. Survivors also include numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins that were all special to him.
Willie was a member of First Baptist Church in Winters. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Brenda, an unbelievable Dad to his sons, Bryan and Brent, and a loving PaPa to all of his grandchildren.
Visitation was held at Winters Funeral Home on Monday, October 18th from 6:00 to 7:00. Services were at First Baptist Church in Winters at 10:30 am on Tuesday, October 19th with David Pate officiating. Burial followed at Lakeview Cemetery in Winters. Pallbearers were: Jerry Davis, Jr., Shane Pairish, Chad Decker, Greg Proffitt, Jake Proffitt, Allan Green, and Austen Green. Honorary pallbearers were Willie's grandsons: Matthew Ingle, Kade Green, Blake Green and Brenton Green, along with his lifelong friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Winters or your favorite charity.
