He was a 1967 graduate of Brown High School and earned his bachelor's degree from Georgia State University in 1971, followed by an executive MBA from Stanford University.
He retired in 2019 after a distinguished career as a trusted leader and mentor in Georgia's banking community. Over the years, Bill served as a division president of United Community Bank (following its acquisition of Liberty National where he was a founding director and CEO); senior vice president of Bank South; division president at Peoples Bank in Conyers; president and CEO of Planters First Bank; and president of the Rockdale County Chamber of Commerce.

Known for his leadership, loyalty, and "impeccable manners", Bill also enjoyed life's simple pleasures. He loved golfing and attending the Masters, listening to the Beatles, traveling to Italy and Spain, and exploring the American West including the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. At home, he took pride in a perfectly kept lawn, never turned down a chocolate bar or a Varsity chili dog, and cherished time with his family and friends.
