William Gibson Cutts, Jr. M.D., 82, passed away Saturday, September 19, 2020. A private memorial of his Life was officiated by Rev. Nathan Brandon on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at The Georgia National Cemetery. Dr. Cutts was a member of First Baptist Church of Canton, Ga.
Dr. Cutts was born in Jefferson, Georgia, the son of the late Evelyn Creighton Cutts and William G. Cutts, Sr. and preceded in death by his son William Warren Cutts, brother Robert (Beau) Warren Cutts, and his sister Pamela Cutts Pursley. Dr. Cutts grew up in Jefferson, Ga. and in Marietta, Ga. where he was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Marietta High School in 1956. He attended Mercer University and graduated in 1960. Dr. Cutts was a fourth generation Mercer graduate.
Dr. William Gibson Cutts, Jr. married the love of his life, Anna Marie Johnston Cutts, on April 15, 1962 at Enon Baptist Church in Rome, Ga. The couple met at a Baptist Student Union Party at Georgia State College for Women.
Dr. Cutts studied medicine at the Medical College of Georgia and graduated in 1964. Dr. Cutts, completed a rotating internship at the Medical Center of Middle Georgia in Macon from 1964-1965. Dr. Cutts served his country as a rank of Captain in the United States Air Force from 1966-68 at Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Dr. Cutts was a surgical resident from 1968-1971 at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital. Dr Cutts then did a plastic surgery fellowship at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida from 1971-1972.
Dr. Cutts and family moved to Canton to start a surgical practice in June of 1972. The Cutts Family bought the home of Paul Edge where they built an 18th century farmhouse in the valley on Puckett Creek.
Dr. Cutts practiced surgery in Canton from 1972-.1999. Dr. Cutts was a member of the American Medical Association, The American College of Surgeons, and Theta Kappa Phi honorary medical fraternity. He was passionate about medicine, his patients, and the quality of good care. Canton, Georgia was his home for 48 years.
Dr. Cutts had a strong desire to fly and purchased his patriotic red, white, and blue hot air balloon when he was one of only 200 people in the United States to be flying in 1974. He also had a love of astronomy and enjoyed spending time looking at the nighttime sky. Dr. Cutts was very involved with the Boy Scouts of America program. He served as assistant scoutmaster of Troop 241 in Canton. Dr. Cutts was himself an Eagle Scout and three of his four sons were Eagle Scouts. Dr. Cutts served as the Health and Safety Chairman of the Boy Scouts of America Atlanta Area Council for over 13 years. Dr. Cutts traveled with the scouts to Philmont Scout Ranch and to the Northern Tier Canoe Base in Ely, Minnesota.
Dr. Cutts had a love of poetry and wrote many poems that were inspired by scouting trips and travlels with his wife, Marie.
Dr. Cutts is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anna Marie Johnston Cutts; Sons: Julian Creighton Cutts, Robert (Bert) Gibson Cutts (Frances) and Russell Bradley Cutts; and by grandchildren: Hunter Wilson Cutts, Chelsia McGuire-Padgett, Owen Cutts, and Miles Cutts.
