BRYAN, WILLIAM SWOPE, was born July 17th, 1947 in Louisville, KY and died on August 10th, 2021 in Apex, NC where he resided for 33 years. The son of Henry and Frances Bryan, he grew up in the Beechmont community of Louisville where he was a member of Beechmont Presbyterian Church and the Boy Scouts. In 1961 he earned the Eagle Scout Award.
In 1965 Mr. Bryan graduated from Louisville Male High School as First Honor (Valedictorian) and Senior Class President. In 1969 Mr. Bryan earned a Bachelor of Science diploma from Davidson College. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and the track and field team.
During the Vietnam War, from May 1971 until February 1972 Mr. Bryan proudly served his country. Upon completion of Basic Training at Fort Knox, KY he earned the American Spirit Honor Medal. He completed advanced individual training in artillery intelligence at Fort Sill, OK and was named, Distinguished Graduate. During his deployment, Mr. Bryan became a member of the 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 320th Field Artillery, 101st Airborne Division. In March 1972 he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
Mr. Bryan relocated to Apex, NC and worked for the Apex and Boulevard Animal Hospitals. In 1983 he graduated from NC State University with the degree of Master of Wood and Paper Science. He was employed by the university until his retirement.
Mr. Bryan was preceded in death by his parents Henry Werne Bryan and Frances Swope Bryan. He is survived by his brother, Dr. John A. Bryan (Ann) of Atlanta, GA; niece, Rebecca Bryan Bracy (John) of Charleston, SC and nephew, Dr. John A. Bryan, II of Ila, GA; great nephews, Jackson N. Bracy and Bryan A. Bracy of Charleston, SC and Alexander H. Bryan of Ila, GA; godsons, Franklin Barnhart, IV and Caleb Barnhart, of Cary; several cousins and longtime dear friends Dr. and Mrs. Franklin Barnhart, III (Julie) of Cary, NC, Dr. and Mrs. Dan Allen (Ann) of Snow Camp, NC, Dr. and Mrs. Les Tremaine (Pat) of Auburn, AL, and many others, especially his NCSU group.
A graveside service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Monday December 20th at Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville. Friends to gather inside the Broadway gate by 12:45 p.m. Monday. The family suggests contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Nature Conservancy.
