
William "Bill" Bowron

William (Bill) Bowron passed away November 2, 2023. He was born August 14, 1927 in Mount Vernon to Myrtle and Maurice Bowron. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1945 and began his career with the U.S. Postal Service in Mount Vernon. He entered the Army in 1945 and served until 1947. Upon his return home he attended Skagit Valley College, while resuming his work at the Mount Vernon Post Office, as clerk and then Superintendent of Mails for several years. He retired from the Mount Vernon Post Office after 41 years of service.
Bill played the trombone and was very active in the music community, playing in the Skagit Symphony Orchestra, the Skagit Community Band, the North Cascades Concert Band and various jazz bands and small music groups. He was a volunteer firefighter with Cedardale Fire Department for several years. Bill and Anna volunteered together for the Mount Vernon Police Department for over 25 years and in 2005 were honored for their volunteer work by Governor Christine Gregoire at the Governor's Mansion in Olympia.
Bill enjoyed reading, educational TV programs and visiting museums throughout the area. He enjoyed attending the many Classic Car shows. After their retirement they went on many driving trips throughout the United States and Canada and visited many museums and Classic Car showrooms. Bill was always active in his children's school and was an officer in the PTA Association, helping with school carnivals and fundraising events. His family always came first, and he spent a great amount of time with his two daughters, taking them on hikes to many of the surrounding mountains and making sure they would grow up with a love of the outdoors.
Bill played golf and won a hole-in-one contest. He enjoyed hiking and hunting and he was a long distance bike rider and rode his bicycle up Chuckanut Drive to Bellingham, and to La Conner and Anacortes regularly. He went elk hunting every year in the Blue Mountains with his hunting friends and in 1985 finally got his elk and hung up his gun. He was a master at figuring out how to fix anything, and he took care of his home building cabinets and storage wherever needed. If he didn't have a tool he needed he would just go out in his shop and make one.
Bill was very active in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School, serving on the Church Council in various capacities, as well as his ushering duties at Sunday services and working around the church.
Bill was predeceased by his brother, Jack; his parents and several cousins.
He is survived by his wife, Anna, daughters, Nancy Kupp (Andy) of Bremerton and Joan Hornick (Dan) of Poulsbo, two step-granddaughters, Kimberly (Paul) Kavanaugh of California and Dakota (Bruce) Dunbar of South Carolina and four step-great grandchildren, Devin and Drew Kavanaugh, and Becket and Zara Dunbar, one sister, Marilyn Raefield of Edmonds, and special nephew and niece, David and Tracie Skrinde, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 18 at 1:00 p.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2015 East Blackburn Road, Mount Vernon, Washington. Memorial gifts honoring Bill's life may be sent to First Evangelical Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 777, Mount Vernon, WA 98273.
