Fred grew up in Thomson, GA where he played baseball, basketball, and football. He attended the University of Georgia and was part of the Sigma Pi fraternity. He spent his college summers as a lifeguard in New Jersey where he was in water skiing shows. He served for six years with the army national guard in Georgia and Virginia. He worked with Eli Lilly for 32 years until he retired. After he retired he dedicated his time and energy to mission trips both in the US and around the world. He helped organize disaster relief efforts for hurricanes Katrina and Sandy. He led the building of a new children's home at The Boys Farm in Newberry, SC. He worked on churches in Poland, shared his love for Jesus in China, and dug holes for clean water cisterns in Nicaragua. He worked with his friends to help do small construction jobs for widows around their houses. He was an active member of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. He chose to serve up close, where he was needed. He served with happiness and enthusiasm. He loved to fish, he loved to be active, and he loved The University of Georgia Bulldogs football team. Fred loved his family! He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Jean Blackmon, his Sons: Chris (wife Maura, grandchildren Will and Lark) and Kirk (wife Heather). Memorial services will be held at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Mercy Med in Columbus, GA or Boys Farm in Newberry, SC.
