William "Bill" Jackson, age 88, passed away on Monday, August 26, 2024, at his residence with his family by his side.
Bill was born in Dillon, SC on September 3, 1935, he was the third son of the late Frank and Annie Jackson. Bill was a graduate of Dillon High School, where he was an all-star pitcher. He was a member of Surfside First Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon for many years, and religiously attended The Berean Sunday School class. Bill was a Former Columbia Police Officer for 12 years and was in the South Carolina National Guard for 4 years. He was a Public Works Superintendent and a Building Contractor. Bill retired from Defender Industries at the age of 59. He was an avid golfer with several hole in ones, known as Action Jackson (AJ). He was awarded Club Champion at Wachesaw, and later became a member of Wachesaw East. Bill's love of golf led him to create an annual tournament called The Blue and Gray Golf Classic, which enticed numerous golfers around the country to come play in Myrtle Beach, SC. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jackie Jackson, a nephew Jimmy Jackson Jr, as well as his siblings, Ruthie Hyatt (sister), Mildred Wethington (sister), Betty Hood (sister), Dottie Summerford (sister), Frank Jr Jackson (brother), and L. H. Jackson (brother).
Survivors include his loving wife of 26 years, JoAnne Jackson of Surfside Beach; a son, Larry Jackson of Charleston, SC; two daughters, Kay Westfall of Gilbert, SC and Teresa McKellar (Peter) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; ten grandchildren, Charlie Hobson, Katie Jackson, Billy Jackson, Christina Kennedy (Steven), Gibson Westfall, Grace McKellar, Julia McKellar, Alex McKellar, Andrew McKellar, and Rebecca Williams (Josh); numerous nieces and nephews; four great-grandchildren and his last living brother, Jim Jackson (Jeanette) of Winston Salem, NC.
Everyone who knew or encountered Bill loved him fully. He was a well-respected and honored member of his community.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 7, 2024, at First Baptist Church of Surfside Beach. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
