William "Bill" Altman, beloved husband of 64 years to Sara Ginn Altman, passed away Friday, June 25, 2021, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. Born in Johnsonville, SC, he was the son of the late Edward S. and Sudie Rogers Altman.
Enlisting at age seventeen, Bill served in the U.S. Navy for over nineteen years. He served aboard the USS Duxberry Bay from 1957-1958 on the Admiral's Staff in the Middle East. Bill was assigned to the Blimp Station in Elizabeth City, N.C., then to the Norfolk Naval Supply Center, and Oceana Air Station in Virginia Beach, Va. where he was an Aviation Supply Chief. He retired in 1962. Bill continued his government career with the Civil Service until his second retirement. He then became a real estate agent, building contractor and owner of Bill Altman Properties while enjoying his love of fishing and the ocean.
Bill and Sara moved to Sumter 21 years ago to be near family. They became members of Trinity United Methodist Church and the FAHOLA Sunday School class.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters; Sharon Kay Berry and Karlin Altman; a brother Donald Ray Altman; a sister Geraldine Mandikunis (Lewis); a nephew William Stokes; a niece Rebecca Stokes; grand-nephew, Kyler Stokes and many dear friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Martha Ann and Lavonne and brothers Harry and Gene.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 10, 2021, at Trinity United Methodist Church with Reverend Joseph James and Reverend Angela Marshall officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.
