William Joseph Albert "Joe", 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 14, 2022 after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Dorothy A. Gahl Albert. Joe was born in Caribou, Maine, on January 12, 1939, a son of the late Eugene and Eva Cowett Albert. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was first stationed at Great Lakes Naval Base, Illinois, where he would meet and soon marry Dorothy Gahl who was serving in the Women's Army Corp. He was then stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska. Joe would go on to serve two tours in the Vietnam War, serving his country and fellow soldiers as a medic, chaplains' assistant and personnel administrator. After the Vietnam War, Joe was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas and would be honorably discharged in 1973. He was a decorated veteran and ranked as sergeant (E6). For two summers he would serve in the Army Reserve in Fort Meade, Maryland, while completing an associate degree. Throughout those two years' service and for many years after, Joe worked for the U.S. Postal Service before retiring. He was fiercely passionate about his faith, was enrolled in the Third Order of Saint Francis and was a member of the Holy Name Society at his parish. Joe also loved to listen to music and was known to keep a favorite song on repeat for several plays. He always looked forward to his Christmas favorites and would play Christmas songs starting in July. Joe always put family first and was a dedicated father and grandfather and is survived by his son Connor O'Rourke (Michelle) and their children Molly and Alexander; daughter Juliana Nesci (Louis) and their daughter Philomena; daughter Ann O'Clair (Michael) and their children Katharine and Emma; daughter Mary Albert (Ryan Burns), and his sister Juliana Jacobs. He was predeceased by 17 brothers and sisters.
Visiting hours will be Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Lupinski Funeral Home, Inc., 821 State Street, New Haven. A Rosary Service will be held at 6 p.m. Burial with Military Honors will be held Saturday morning at 10 in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meriden. Please meet directly at the cemetery office at 9:45 a.m. Masks will be required for all services.
