Wilhelmina J. Wakefield was the ninth of ten children born to the late Frank and
Jessie Jackson on September 21, 1930 in Columbia, South Carolina. She departed
this life to journey onward to her heavenly home on August 26, 2024 in
Greenwood, South Carolina. It was in the Emerald City where she raised a
beautiful, loving family with her husband, educated many generations of young
minds as a teacher, served her community by helping those in need, and prayed
daily as a faithful servant of the Lord.
She was affectionately known by her family and close friends as Billie, but
jokingly, by her granddaughter as, "the Jackie Kennedy of Greenwood." Mrs.
Wakefield was a fashionable woman who loved plants and flowers and spent many
seasons tending to her garden and award winning front lawn. She was also a strong
and courageous fighter, as she often voiced educational and political concerns in
the community and she was a half century survivor of cancer.
Mrs. Wakefield was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, beloved
husband, James A. Wakefield, and darling daughter, Darlene G. Wakefield. Yet,
she leaves to cherish her memory, her dutiful and loving son Stanley S. Wakefield
of the home, adoring daughter Joy Wakefield-Brace (Roderic) of Charlotte, NC,
and her three grandchildren, Kirah Wilhelmina, Charles Ardis, and James Stewart.
Mrs. Wakefield's legacy will continue to shine brightly in the beautiful smiles and
hearts of her great-grandsons, Victor M. Green and Roderic J. Brace.
