Walter Vernon Casto, Jr., 90 years old, passed away at 11:18 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka. Walter was born on September 13, 1930 in New Troy, MI to the late Walter V. Castro Sr. and Mabel (Black) Casto.
Along with his loving wife of 65 years, Vera Lybarger Casto, Walter is survived by their children, Bruce Casto of Ravenna, OH, Diane (Gary) Hunt of Cincinnati, OH, and Patricia (Thanos) Kotronis of Hastings on the Hudson, NY; seven grandchildren; one great grandson soon to be born; brother, Howard Casto of Myrtle Beach, SC; and three sisters, Marguerite "Midge" Mohr of Winamac, IN, Shirley Reese of Plymouth, and Linda Bope of Plymouth.
Walter joined Allen-Bradley (A-B) in 1969 and retired in 1991 from A-B as a Senior Vice President, and the Chief Executive for the company's former Industrial Systems and Components Group. He was known for his many contributions to the numerical control and programmable logic controller business and was considered a pioneer in factory automation throughout the industrial control industry.
Walter proudly served his country with the United Sates Air Force prior to joining Bendix Missiles Systems as a development engineer in 1960 after earning a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at Purdue University. He joined Burroughs Ann Arbor Labs in 1962. In 1965, Walt was named research associate at the University of Michigan.
Funeral services will be held October 5th, between 11:00 a.m and 1:00 p.m. at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family during this time. Military graveside services will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.
