Walter Douglas Mawhinney of Hutchinson Island, Stuart FL, 87, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family while holding his wife's hand on April 29, 2021.
Walter graduated from Tufts University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He went on to receive Master degrees in Nuclear Engineering and Executive Management from UConn and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He used these degrees in his 35-year career at Combustion Engineering/ABB in Windsor CT.
His passions were serving the Episcopal Church, golf and his family. Walter could be heard singing in the choir, helping on committees, and boasting about his grandchildren. A round of golf with his family and friends was sure to put a smile on his face.
Walter's biggest source of pride and accomplishment was the family he nurtured with his wife, Marilyn, of almost 65 years. They met at St. Paul's Cathedral in Boston MA and moved to CT after serving in the Navy. They moved to Hutchinson Island in 2001 and made that their happy home for his remaining years.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn, and their three children and their families; LuAnn and Don Wolff and grandchildren Eric, Ryan, Todd and his wife Sabra, Brent; Lynda and Peter Belanger and grandchildren Peter, John and Margaret; Kent Mawhinney and grandchildren Alanna, Luke and Chase. He also leaves his sister Diane Porfert and her husband Fred, several cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his church family, golf partners, bridge club friends, Fairview Villa friends and other dear friends he has cherished over the years.
A date for his funeral services has not been finalized. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Walter's memory to St John's Episcopal Church 523 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon CT 06066.
