Walter Merritt Mattox was set free on November 17, 2023 at the Fellowship Home at Cotton Hill. Walter was born on November 9, 1942 in Atlanta, GA to the late Robert Sharp and Cornelia Merritt Mattox. When he was three years old the family moved home to Cuthbert. Walter attended the Cuthbert schools and Andrew College before attending the University of Georgia. In 1963 he received his Master's degree in Business Administration. He then entered the U.S. Army where he served as a Captain in the Medical Service Corps in the States and in Vietnam. Walter received the Bronze Star for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against Hostile Forces and the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service in 1969 for his service in Vietnam. In 1970, he returned to Cuthbert with his late wife Marlene and daughter Melanie to join his father in operating the family business, Mattox's, where he remained President until its closing in 1993. Walter also spent 33 years with the Public Housing Authority. He was the Executive Director of the West Georgia Consortium until his retirement in 2011. Walter served on the Board of Albany Technical College for 10 years and was Chairman of the Board for 2 years. He was a member of the Cuthbert United Methodist Church holding various administrative positions throughout the years, a Rotarian, and a lifetime member of the NRA.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2:00PM on Sunday, November 19, 2023 in the Cuthbert Eastview Cemetery with Rev. Ivelisse Quinones officiating.
Walter was proceeded in death by his brother Dr. Robert Sharp Mattox, III, sister-in-law Glenda Mattox and niece Merritt Mattox.
He is survived by his wife, Bennie C. Mattox of Cuthbert, daughter, Melanie Stewart of Cumming, grandson, Seth Stewart of Marietta, 3 step-sons, Fred Patterson of Cuthbert, Doug (Tiffany) Patterson of Ellaville and Joe (Emily) Patterson of Saint Augustine, FL and 5 step-grandsons.
