Walter Amos Linder, 88, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of April 11, 2021, at Walter Reed Convalescent Center, Gloucester, VA. He was born December 15, 1932 in Louisville, Ohio and graduated from Alliance High School on June 8, 1950. Walter enlisted in the US Airforce on January 3, 1952 and traveled extensively in the US and overseas. In his free time, he enjoyed basketball, acrobatics, and judo. During his military tenure, he served in numerous campaigns in both Korea (1952-1953) and Vietnam (1968-1972). Walter finally retired at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, VA, on April 1, 1972 after 20 years of dedicated service. He was awarded various decorations, including a Bronze Star Metal for his service in Vietnam.
He spent most of his retired life in Hampton, VA close to family, but also lived on Hatteras Island (Frisco, NC) for 16 years. He loved Cape Hatteras for its beaches and its serenity, but mostly for the great fishing. He worked for Surf-N-Sound Campground and for the Frisco Pier. As an avid fisherman, he made lasting memories with family and friends, always cooking up seafood dinners for anyone visiting him. He received many citations for catching his favorite fish?including pompano, whiting, and flounder?using "sand fleas" of course!
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Melicent Linder, step-father Lin; brothers, Gerald, Richard, Eldon, Lenny, and his sister Kathleen. He is survived by daughters, Scerena (Bernie) Verhage, Gianna (Dave) Spencer, Dianna Linder Terry, and son Mark (Michele) Linder; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Our sincerest appreciation to Walter Reed Convalescent Center and Grace Hospice for their support and compassion during his final, peaceful journey home.
