Walter Herbert, known as Wally, passed away on July 16, 2022 at the age of 92. He was born to Jerome and Grace Herbert in New York City where he was raised. Wally graduated from Culver Military Academy, Transylvania University in Lexington KY, and New York University School of Medicine. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Fran, his children Grace Fidler, Danielle Herbert, Matthew Herbert, and Nancy LaPoint, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
After college, Wally served in Korea and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds suffered at Heartbreak Ridge. Following medical school, he specialized in clinical cardiology with a particular interest in hemodynamics. Most of his career was at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla N.Y. and New York Medical College where he was an Associate Professor of Medicine and Chief of Cardiology. In the early years, he did pioneering work in pediatric cardiology as he was the only doctor performing pediatric catheterization in both Westchester and Putnam counties. He was a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.
Wally enjoyed sports and opera as often as his busy schedule allowed. After retirement to South Pomfret , Vermont in the 1980's, he bought a farm tractor and became a skilled stone mason building beautiful walls and gardens. He also was finally able to indulge his love of reading. Wally was always a student, always trying to fill the void his medical career never left time for. He was particularly interested in early Judaism and early Christianity . He also studied French and German.
Wally and Fran moved to Kendal @Hanover in 2011. He received wonderful care in Kendal's health center. The center's staff was superlative.
Interment was in the Jewish Cemetery in Lebanon. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association and Doctors Without Borders.
