Walter Ward Henning, age 96, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on January 27, 2021, from COVID-19. Walter, aka Daddy and Pop, was born August 23, 1924, in Fowlkes, TN. Ironically, 22 years later he would marry the love of his life, Annie Christine Roach, of Fowlkes. They were married for 68 years prior to her passing in 2014. Walter is survived by his three children and their spouses, Carrie Ann (Henning Thornton) and Don Akey; Sandra (Henning) and Don Rice; and Phillip and Frankie Henning. Grandsons Eric and Carrie Thornton, Lee and Amanda Thornton, and Marc and Alona Henning. Great-grandchildren Victoria and Jamie Smith, Nick and Carrlie Thornton, Erin and Casey Gruno, Lily Thornton, Damien Welles, Jisselle and Justice Wunrow, Sahar Golena, Leilu Conaway, and Charlottee Rickman. He was predeceased by his son, Walter Henning, Jr.
Walter was a military policeman during World War II, serving in England, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and the Netherlands. He always said the MPs were "the solders best friends." Walter owned Henning Upholstery and Drapery Shop for more than 50 years, retiring in 2015. He was a member of Grimes Memorial United Methodist Church for 66 years and a member of Mullins United Methodist Church for two years, where he will be missed for his Glories and Amens. He was the national President of Christian Men's Full Gospel Fellowship. A friend said he saved many people with his witnessing and encouragement. It was hard going to a restaurant or store with him because he wanted to talk to all the children and parents, witnessing and singing songs for them. His favorite song was "We Have This Moment, Today." Please look up the words.
Besides the Lord and his family, Walter's other love was the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Team. He could talk about them for hours. And, a cup of coffee was always his delight.
A graveside service will be held at Forest Hill Funeral Home East on February 10 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Forever Young Veterans, 185 S. Center St. #110, Collierville, TN 38017. He went to Washington, DC, with them and loved attending their monthly meetings.
