Walter Stanley Filar of North Judson, age 75, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on March 8, 2021. He was born October 24, 1945, in Gary, Indiana. Wally, as he liked to be called, was in the first graduating class of Andrean High School. He retired from US Steel after 34 years. He enjoyed sitting in his garage with all his buddies for hours, working on vehicles. Wally loved driving old hot rods he restored. He liked going to car shows, swap meets, camping, fishing, and too many other things to mention. He was a loving husband and father. He was the first one to help if anyone ever needed it. Walter leaves behind his cherished wife, Dawn Louise (Gossett) Filar of North Judson, son William (Darla) Filar of Valparaiso, son John Filar of Plymouth, daughter Jennifer (Darrin McCullough) Filar of Valparaiso, daughter Tracy Enos of Valparaiso, sister Dolores Coates of Arizona, sister Angeline (Peter) Olovich of Merrillville, brother Eugene Filar of Michigan, sister-in-law Carol Filar of Valparaiso, grandchildren Everett, Elliot, Evan, Jamie, Tyler, Connor, and Alex, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Cecilia (Banaszak) Filar, brother-in-law Bob Coates, and son-in-law Bryon Enos. Thank you to the staff at Dunes Hospice inculding Bri Rhodes, CNA, who came to feel like an adopted granddaughter, Chaplin Joe Mollet, Nurse Debbie and all the other nurses, and Walter's caseworker Andy.
There will be a Gathering of Family & Friends 11 AM CT Saturday, April 3, 2021. Followed by a Memorial Service at 1 PM CT at the O'Donnell Funeral Home, Inc., North Judson, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Saint Luke Community Church, San Pierre.
