Wally was born January 19, 1938, in Hale Center, Texas, to Bert and Lorene (Cure) Stewart. Growing up in Olton, Wally graduated from Olton High School in 1956 and attended West Texas College. Serving in the United States Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Wally also farmed in the Olton area before starting a career with IBM in 1965. On January 16, 1959, Wally married the love of his life, Patsy Marie Moss, in Olton, and they were married over 63 years. He moved home to Hale Center in 1991 and retired in 1993 from IBM as a regional manager.
Wally was a very civic minded person and he served his community in many ways throughout the years. He was a member of the Hale Center Lions Club where he was flag chairman and helped develop the carts used to deliver the flags. He also delivered Meals on Wheels and was a former Hale Center City Council member. A devoted member of the First United Methodist Church in Hale Center, Wally served on various church committees including Ad Council and was the church's lay representative to conference for over 15 years. Wally was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and member of Masonic Lodge #832. While serving Hale Center, Wally was instrumental in stocking Caudle Lake and starting the Kid Fish program.
An amateur inventor and engineering wonder, Wally could build, trouble-shoot, and repair just about anything. He was a "fixer" and was often found helping people fix whatever was broken. He was a member of the Good Sams Travel Club and enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing. Wally's service, talents, kindness, sense of humor, and friendship will be missed greatly by all who knew him.
Wally was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Lorene Stewart, and his sister, Latrell Hysinger.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Patsy "Pat" Stewart of Hale Center, his son, Coby Stewart and wife Freida of Augusta, Kansas, and two daughters, Twyleen Cruddas and husband David of Buffalo Gap, Texas and Raimey Scheffler and husband Steve of Granite Falls, Washington. He was blessed with nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
