Waldo (Butch) Warren Nelson passed away at Charles Regional Medical Center, La Plata, MD, the morning of October 24, 2024 after a hard-fought battle with lung cancer.
Born on June 9, 1941 in Hanover, New Hampshire. The first son of Waldo Y. and Phila M. Nelson (Edmands). He grew up on a dairy farm in Newbury, Vermont, joining the United States Air Force in 1960. While in the Air Force he traveled to many countries, meeting his future wife, Eva Mondonedo Araya, in Lima, Peru. They had 3 weddings. First, was a civil wedding in Lima, Peru in January of 1967. Second, Marrying her August 5, 1967 at the First Congregational Church in Newbury, Vermont. Third, was a Catholic wedding in March of 1970. August 5, 2024 was their 57th year wedding anniversary.
After being honorably discharged from the Air Force he attended college receiving a Bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont. He then went on to graduate from Pittsburg University with a Master's degree. He began employment with the United States Department of Health and Human Services, moved with Eva to Forest Heights MD in 1970. Where he was on the town council until moving to Waldorf, MD in 1980. He then retired from HHS in 2002.
Waldo enjoyed being outdoors. After a day at the office, you could find him with a beer relaxing in his vegetable or flower garden pulling weeds or planting something new. On the weekends he could be found on his boat, out of Buzz's Marina, Ridge MD, fishing in the Chesapeake Bay. He enjoyed playing cards and the game cribbage.
Waldo was preceded in death by his parents, Waldo Y. and Phila M. Nelson, and his brother, Bruce Nelson.
He is survived by his wife, Eva Nelson, sister, Sandra Bartlett, son, Waldo Y Nelson, and two, grandsons Gavin and Cole Nelson.
Visitation will be on Thursday, November 21, 2024 from 9:00 AM until time of Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 3320 St. Peter's Drive, Waldorf, MD 20601. Interment will follow at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery at 11:15 AM.
