Mrs. Virginia Miller Dyer Fairey, 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 11, 2022 in Centennial, CO.
A graveside burial service will be held at Memorial Park, Orangeburg, SC, 4:00pm, Sunday, March 20, 2022. Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service in Elizabethtown, KY,
and a celebration of life in Charleston, SC, will be held at a later date.
She was born on New Year's Day, 1932, in Sonora, KY, daughter of the late James Benjamin Dyer, Sr., and Anna Virginia Rhodes Dyer. She was married for 59 years to Colonel John M. Fairey, U.S. Army, Retired, until his passing in 2019. Additionally, she was pre-deceased by her brother, James Benjamin Dyer, Jr. (Ben). Prior to moving to Colorado in 2018, she was a long-time resident of Elizabethtown, KY. Mrs. Fairey was a 1950 graduate of Sonora HS, and a 1954 graduate of Western Kentucky State Teachers College earning a degree in library science. Prior to her marriage, and again after raising her family, she was a librarian at Fort Knox. As an Army wife she contributed to the success of her husband's career, organizing and leading unit family support groups, charity and service initiatives, volunteering with the Officer's Wives Club, and serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother. She successfully moved her family into 8 separate Army postings including an overseas tour to Korea. A life-long Methodist, she saw to the religious upbringing of her children and was an active member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown for many years. She supported the local arts in Hardin County and Louisville, volunteered as a docent at the Hardin County History Museum, was a member of the Elizabethtown Ladies Club and perhaps most importantly was always up for watching college basketball! She passed on her love of reading and her love of animals to her grandchildren. Mom enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, cooking, birding, gardening, and researching family genealogy. She was a wonderful mother and Nana, and will be very much missed.
She is survived by two sons, Lieutenant Colonel John Dyer Fairey, U.S. Army, Retired (Lisa) of James Island, SC, and Wayne Fairey (Linda) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and seven grandchildren: John William, Elizabeth Marie, Anna, Melissa, Caitlyn, Kristin and Mary Alice Dyer Fairey.
