A 60-year romance has sadly come to an end...
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Virgie Kay Lewis (nee Polus), 83, beloved wife, mom, sister, aunt, grandma, and cousin to many. She passed on September 22, 2019, after a hard-fought, 5-year cancer battle she faced with grace, dignity and positivity.
Virgie was born in Elmira, Michigan on July 17, 1936, to Casmer B. and Dorothy M. (Moffett) Polus. She married Daniel H. Lewis on June 13, 1959, though Dan's crush on her started when they were 10 years old. After being gone from the area for five years, they returned in 1964 to make Gaylord their home. In 1992, when Dan retired, they moved to the Upper Peninsula, where Dan could focus on his passion for walleye fishing. Virgie was kind and loving, and always put others before herself. She was a cake decorator for friends and family, a seamstress, a good cook, and a sports fan, and she never met a cookie or loaf of bread she didn't like. But most of all she was a great wife and mom who knew how to make a house a home.
Virgie is survived by her husband of 60 years, Dan Lewis; her children, Amy Lewis, of Warren, MI, and Bart (Amy) Lewis, of Plainwell, MI; and grandchildren, Hannah Mankowski, Jake Lewis, Mary and Ellie Lewis, Colin, Seth and Mia McPherson; brother, Larry (Donna) Polus; and sister, Linda (Keith) Lester.
Virgie was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Grace Lewis.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ball Hospice House, 308 W. 12th Ave., Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783 or to your local animal shelter in her name.
