Verda Marie (Lively) Burnett was born at home on a Sunday, June 17, 1928, and died peacefully on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, James Burnett, her parents, brothers, sister, all aunts, and uncles. Her five children survive her: LaRue Williams (Thomas), Rex Burnett (Carol), Phyllis Burnett, Mark Burnett (Bj), and Connie Burnett, along with 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She grew up with her brothers and sister on the family farm. After high school, she moved to Galveston, where she met her husband, James. After relocating to central Texas and eventually settling in Liberty Hill in 1972, they started two successful businesses together. Marie wore many hats in her lifetime - Teacher in Business School, Administrative Assistant, Executive Secretary, Paralegal, Bookkeeper, Room Mother, Girl Scout leader, and her children's biggest fan. She was also a real estate broker and local "tax lady". She worked 27 years for Fab-Con Products in Leander before retiring at age 71 in 1999.
She loved roses ("the good ones that REALLY smell like roses"), baking, sewing, embroidery, and quilting by hand. Her greatest love was having her family gather to share a meal, especially as the family expanded and spread out. She was the glue that held everything together, kept us all going, and made it all work. She is an irreplaceable treasure and will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the Bertram Cumberland Presbyterian Church at 11:00 AM with a reception meal to follow.
In place of flowers, donations can be made to the church.
