Varnie Mae Herlong Rodwell, 99, widow of Col. Joseph Robert Rodwell, Sr., (USAF Ret.), died peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, in Charleston.
Born January 14, 1923, in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late William Pou Herlong and the late Varnie Mae McLeod Herlong. She was a member of Paxville United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three children, Ann Rodwell Crigler of Charleston, William Allen Rodwell (Kathy) of Myrtle Beach and Thomas Thurmond Rodwell of Charleston; ten grandchildren, Joseph Robert Rodwell III (Tia), Bryan William Rodwell, Varnie Elizabeth Call, MD (Joe), Britton Rodwell Crigler, MD (Lauren), Julieann Tatum Crigler Murphy, Foster Allen Rodwell (Leslie), William Dewey Rodwell (Kara), Evan Thomas Rodwell (Amy), Shelby Kathleen Rodwell, and Ansley Elizabeth Rodwell; fourteen great grandchildren, Joseph Rodwell, Sienne, Keah & Zalynn Rodwell, Carter & Libba Call, Nathan & Greyson Crigler, Caleb & Eli Murphy, Clayton & Jack Rodwell, and Jay & Reese Rodwell; a brother, Don Louis Herlong (Martha Ellen) of Sumter; two sisters, Catherine Herlong Ard of Manning and Freddie Herlong Crymes of Charleston; family member, Joan Rodwell Fedderson (Charlie) of Ft. Mill; and many special nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband of 53 years, she was preceded in death by a son, Lt. Cmd. Joseph Robert Rodwell, Jr. (USN Ret.); a brother, William Pou Herlong, Jr. (Barbara); three sisters, Farris Herlong Phillips (Robert), Gloria Herlong Lewis (Ben) and Beverly Herlong Nettles (Roy); and a brother-in-law, Julius Herman Ard.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Paxville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mary Everhart officiating. Burial will follow at Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.
Her six grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends immediately following the committal service at Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.
