Val Thomas Moss, beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, cousin and friend, passed away at the age of 84 in the early hours of July 25, 2024, at his home in Rexburg, Idaho after a long illness.
He was born on August 9, 1939 to Thomas Royce Moss and Margaret Nelson Moss in Rexburg, Idaho, the youngest of seven children.
Val graduated from Madison High School and received a BS in Engineering at BYU Provo. At heart, he was always a farmer, hard working in the field, and with his cows and animals he loved. He was an industrious guy! He didn't get riled too often, except when sitting in church and getting a message that his cows were out... again!
He loved to play basketball, football, baseball, golf and whatever came his way. He was an avid BYU fan in all men and women sports. Back in the day, he and his dad would listen to the radio whenever BYU Football played. As sports became more accessible through TV, you knew where to find him when any BYU sport was broadcasted.
Val loved to go camping and fishing with his family, and 4-wheeling became a great adventure, especially going over extremely hard trails and leaving others behind!
Val loved his country and served in the Army Reserves from 1958 - 1964 and received an honorable discharge.
He worked at INL for 16 years in the nuclear field. He worked at various nuclear facilities in California, Kansas, and Michigan as a contractor. Wherever he went, Rexburg was always his forever home.
Val was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints all his life. He loved serving in the church and always volunteered to help with service projects. He served in the Elders Quorum Presidency, Ward Mission Leader, Sunday School Presidency, and other various callings. He was a Scoutmaster twice and helped several young men receive their Eagle Scout.
He and his wife served in the temple for 10 years. Later they were called on three service missions, one year for the Church's Humanity Program (which included meals on wheels), two years for the 12 Step Addiction Recovery Program and one year as Housing Coordinators for the area missionaries. Those were memorable times of service, gratitude, and love.
Val loved to build and in the 1990's took part of his land, removed trees, built two log cabins and 7 RV spaces, which became known as the Sheffield RV Park & Cabins. Over time, 5 more cabins were built, a beautiful 2-story log building added in the center of the RV Park which became the Country Bear Boutique. Eventually he had a total of 24 RV spaces and hook ups. He planted over fifty trees in the park to beautify the area and later sold it in 2019.
His family was his greatest joy, 3 children, 17 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, plus friends that became family. Family is everything.
Val is survived by his wife, Kathy Moss, his daughter Shawnee Preston, son, Tom Moss (Erin), (step)sons: Bryon Elsberry (Mindi) Shane Elsberry (Mandy), and Allen Elsberry.
Val was preceded in death by Sandi Jensen (daughter), Keith Moss (brother), Dale Moss (brother), Donald Moss (brother), Anita Moss (sister), Thomas Royce Moss (father), Margaret Nelson Moss (mother), and (step)son, Jason Elsberry.
