It is with both joy and sadness that we share the homegoing of our father, Tom McCoy, on July 30, 2021. He was 96 years old and lived a life that many people only dream about. He had some amazing experiences and stories over the years that made his life rich, interesting, and well-lived.
Tom loved his family dearly, including a son, Thomas Tyndall McCoy, Jr. (deceased) and two daughters, Terri McCoy of Jacksonville, FL and Beth Thomas (Blake) of Daytona Beach. He had three grandchildren including Laura Brown (Clint) of Washington DC, Lindsey Venema (Dan) of Daytona Beach and Luke Thomas (Ashley) of Ormond Beach. He also had two great grandsons, Hudson and Remy Brown, plus many nieces and nephews.
He was born in Lake, Mississippi to Katie and Byrd McCoy. He had three sisters and one brother and is survived by his youngest sister, Barbara Lou Hardy of Pearl, MS. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the Army during World War II and served from 1943-1946. He was in the 14th Armored Division, 62nd Infantry Battalion in France and Germany.
He met the love of his life, Margaret Beasley, at Troy State University. They were married in 1950 and had 64 years together. Tom graduated from API (now Auburn University) in 1952. He began a 40-plus year career with State Farm in Birmingham in 1954. He was an Agent, Agency Manager and Agency Director in Alabama and an Executive Assistant in Bloomington, Illinois. He spent the last 20 years of his career as an Agency Manager in Orlando. He earned the Chartered Life Underwriter designation in 1972 and served as the Central Florida CLU President in 1979. He served on the Board at Valley Christian Church in Birmingham, was President of the Central Florida Auburn Alumni Association, was on the Board of Directors of the Auburn Alumni Association and was very involved with the Florida Citrus Sports Association.
Tom and Margaret had a second home in Cashiers, NC where they had many friends and enjoyed "mountain life" at Wade Hampton. Tom was an avid golfer and played many great courses with lots of friends over the years. In Orlando, he and Margaret were members of Bay Hill and the Country Club of Orlando. He loved quail hunting, most sports, developing people and encouraging them to reach their own potential, especially when it came to the State Farm agents he managed over the years.
We are thankful for the legacy he left behind and for the lives he influenced along the way. We rejoice that, as a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, he has joined Margaret in Heaven and we know that we will spend eternity with both of them.
A gathering to celebrate Tom's life will be held at Seasons 52 on August 19, 2021 at 11:30 AM. The address is 7700 W. Sand Lake Rd. Orlando, FL 32819. In lieu of flowers, we ask that any donations you may wish to make in his honor be made to the charity of your choice.
