John C. Wilson, age 67, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2019, in Bloomington, Indiana, after a long illness. He will be fondly remembered in Bloomington as the owner of Pygmalion's Art Supplies as well as a dedicated artist and a fine printmaker. He understood the needs and concern of artists and the importance of supporting both the local arts community and the university art community here in Bloomington. We all will miss him.
John was born on July 4, 1951, in Kansas City, Kansas, to James and Nancy Wilson. Both they and one brother are deceased. He grew up in a family of eight children; he is survived by five siblings and fourteen nieces and nephews.
John was especially close to his sister Nancy Crenshaw and her two sons of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He had planned to retire in Tulsa to continue with his printmaking and to follow another of his lifelong passions: trout and bass fishing.
John was educated at the University of Kansas. He received a BAE in Art Education in 1974, a BFA in Printmaking and Painting in1980, and continued graduate studies in fine arts/print making.
John taught art for a short while but found his true calling as a buyer and later as a manager of four different art supply stores in the Kansas City area. After working in retail art supplies from 1980 until 2007, he had the opportunity to buy Pygmalion's Art Supplies. He had always dreamed of having his own small store in a college community. It was a perfect fit for him and for the store!
A Celebration of John Wilson's Life and Art will be held on July 4th (his birthday) at 4 pm at Pygmalion's Art Supplies, 108 N Grant Street, Bloomington, Indiana. Everyone who knew and loved John is welcome.
