Thomas Murray Lewis, 89, of Fairmont, N.C. passed away on April 22, 2021. Thomas was born in Robeson County, N.C. on April 30, 1931.
He was the son of Douglas Thomas Lewis and Pearle Murray Lewis. Thomas was a graduate of Orrum High School and attended Duke University. He was owner and operator of tobacco auction and warehouse systems in Mayfield, Kentucky and Vidalia, Georgia for over 50 years. He also operated Tom Lewis Farms in Fairmont. Thomas was a lifetime member of Fairmont First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He also served at Campbell University as a member of the Board of Trustees and the Presidential Advisory Board. He was a long-time trustee of the Paul Anderson Youth Home in Vidalia, Georgia, and a member of the UNC Pembroke Chancellor's Club. He and his wife, Shirley, endowed scholarships at both Campbell University, and UNC Pembroke.
Surviving is his wife of 66 years, Shirley Rice Lewis. He is also survived by his daughter, Lisa Lewis Schaeffer, a daughter-in-law, Paula, three grandsons, Austin Lewis (Tara), Hunter Lewis (Kayla), and Ethan Lewis Schaeffer, and five great grandchildren and three nieces and a nephew.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Thomas Rice Lewis, his sister, Margaret Wells, and a great grandson, Braxton.
Visitation will be held at Floyd's Funeral Home in Fairmont from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 24 and a graveside service will be held at the Lewis-Leggett Cemetery on Leggett Road in Fairmont at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 25. Memorials may be made to Fairmont First Baptist Church.
