How do you know Thomas? Please share your stories and photos, and help spread the word about this page!
Tom Ainsworth passed away peacefully at his home on December 9th 2021 with his loving wife, Betty; stepdaughter, Betty Ann; and stepson, Bobby at his side. Tom is predeceased by his parents, Tom and Marie Ainsworth; and his brother, Willard. Tom leaves behind a sister-in-law, Alice Louise Ainsworth of Reno, Nevada; his niece, Lisa; a nephew, Eric; and a very dear friend Shirley Fisch of Delaware.
Tom will be dearly missed by all whose lives have been touched by his generosity and caring personality. In his heart, his stepchildren, Betty Ann and Bobby were as his own, often introducing them "this is our daughter, Betty Ann or I'd like you to meet our son, Bobby". This fondness for family was his nature, as was theirs. His frequent visits down to the Eastern Shore were always welcomed by in-laws, Carolyn Simms, Janet and Dickie Jamar; and his granddaughters, Roni Lynn and Kelley and their families were always a big part of his day when visiting there.
In his younger years, Tom and Betty would often go roller skating or ride on his Harley; then as time passed, Tom decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy where he served honorably as a deep sea salvage diver. Upon leaving the Navy, Tom joined IBM as a mechanical engineer, and was involved in the production of numerous prototypes and systems which have enabled businesses and production facilities alike to prosper throughout the years. Once retired from IBM Tom moved back to Wilmington where he went to work for DuPont.
Retirement wasn't an easy transition for Tom, he always kept busy doing things he loved. Yard work was number one on his list, then traveling with Betty. Be it a road trip to Florida to visit with Bobby and his family, boarding a cruise ship to explore other countries or just a trip to New York to watch the lighting of the Christmas tree, Tom and Betty stayed busy. His love for animals was another passion. He fed, filmed and enjoyed playing with any animal that would come to him.
Thomas Ainsworth, you will be missed dearly by family, friends, neighbors and each and every person that has had the privilege of your company and friendship.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where family and friends may visit beginning at 11:00am. Interment will be held in All Saints Cemetery.
