Terrence John Newberry, 72, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2019.
Born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, he was the son of Florence Irene Newberry and the late John Keith Newberry.
Terry (also locally known as TJ) served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Upon completion of his service, he completed his BS degree in Accounting at Iowa State University. He served as an accountant for a number of firms, ultimately relocating to South Carolina to work with Central Soya/Master Mix in Orangeburg. He also owned and ran a convenience store in Santee and retired from Youmans Gas and Oil in Hollywood, SC. He recently relocated to Anderson to be closer to family.
Terry enjoyed catching, cleaning, cooking and eating fish...especially in the community of others. He was at home on both fresh and salt water. He was also an avid Atlanta Braves fan and would structure his retirement days around the scheduled first pitch for that day. As his granddaughter, Lauren, stated, he was a genuinely warm person that would never say "no" whether asked to hold a baby, play a round of cribbage, or cook dinner for a crowd. He simply wanted to share positive moments with others and responding positively to any request was his way of doing so. Of course, he had a particular affinity with spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren to which he was affectionately known as "Papa."
Survivors include three daughters, Shawn Marie Fleming (David), Laura Lynn Rowell, and Dianne Michelle Ray (Michael); grandchildren, Lauren Melton (Crawford), Chelsea Weekes (Daniel), Maxwell Fleming, Reagan Fleming, Andrew Rowell, Austin Rowell, Aaron Rowell, Alden Ray, and Lillian Ray; six great grandchildren; mother, Florence Irene Newberry (Stumpf); sisters, Kathy Kapustka (Jim) and Sue Krohne (Dennis); brothers, Tim Newberry (Karol) and Steve Newberry (Pam); and his former wife, Charlotte Newberry (Halligan). He was preceded in death by a son, John William Newberry.
On Thursday, August 1, family will receive guests at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Anderson from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at the church at 1:00 p.m.. The burial ceremony will take place at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson following the service, followed by a reception at the Parish Hall at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1200 Cornelia Rd., Anderson, SC 29621.
