Terry Joe Horkman, Sr, 77, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 after an 11 year battle with Stage 4 Melanoma. He was born July 17, 1943 in Harlingen, TX, to Joseph Inious Horkman, Jr. and Maudlo Patrick Horkman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Joseph Inious Horkman, III; and his loving in-laws, George and Betty Gilbert.
He married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Lillian Hope Gilbert, on July 30, 1962, and shared over 58 years together. They were blessed with two sons; Terry Joe, Jr. "TJ" (Angela) and Brian Lee (Cindy); and two grandchildren, Joseph Benjamin Ryan Horkman and Rachel Marie Horkman, all of Houston.
They started their marriage in the Rio Grande Valley where Terry worked with his father at the Phillips 66 station in San Benito. Terry also worked with his father-in-law hanging wallpaper in Houston and the Valley. Terry and Lillian moved to Houston where they spent most of their life. Upon retirement, they became full time RV'ers and enjoyed traveling the country making new friends and doing genealogy. The last few years they split their time between Lake Texana and Houston. Terry loved living on the lake during the "cool" months of the year where they made many special friends.
Terry is also survived by his sister, M. Jeanelle Gillit (Wendell), niece Jody Lynn Gillit, all of Houston; and nephew, Judson Wade Gillit (Michele), and great-niece AnnaMarie, great-nephews Allen and Ethan Gillit, all of Roscommon, MI. He will be missed by special cousin-in-law Karol Ognoskie and special friend Levita Foster.
Special thanks to Dr. Agop Bedikian, Dr. Adi Diab, Dr. Rebecca Harrison, Dr. Susan L. McGovern and staff at MD Anderson who gave Terry 10 wonderful years the family didn't think they would have with him.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to MD Anderson in his memory: https://gifts.mdanderson.org/default.aspx?tsid=10503
