Henley, Terry L., passed away Saturday, July 31, 2021, at our home. He was born to the late Ray Henley and Barbara Cockerham Henley on November 10, 1940 in Seymour, Indiana. He married Jennifer Baldwin Henley, Troy, Ohio, on September 14, 1991, and she survives. Terry is also survived by his sons with the late Martha Henley Yaus, Barron (Jody) Henley of Dublin, Ohio and Troy (Ruby) Henley of Upper Arlington, Ohio, as well as our son, Walker Henley of Troy, Ohio, grandkids Ariel, Alexis, Rylee, Liam and Austin, sisters Sandy (late Ron) Barnes of Sedona, Arizona, Rayetta (Orville) Akers and Laura Jo (Jon Cullen) Stahl, of Seymour, Indiana, mother-in-law, Donna (late Jerry) Baldwin of Troy, Ohio, brother-in-law, Scott (Chelsea) Baldwin of West Liberty, Ohio. Terry's brothers, Tom Henley and Fred Henley, preceded him in passing.
From humble beginnings, Terry worked hard to achieve his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Tri-State University (taking up to 21 credit hours to get through the program quickly!), his Master of Business Administration and Doctorate in Psychology, both from Loyola University. His interests led him to many diverse positions, including Superintendent at Dow Chemical Co., International Sales Manager for cryogenic equipment at Cosmodyne Corporation, Marketing Director at Chemineer, and finally joining brother Fred at his company, Computer Guidance/Med-Systems Management in Dayton, Ohio, as President. They were pioneers in national electronic medical billing, filing the first claims in the United States. The interest grew in electronic EMS billing for fire departments, adding to the over 600 medical clients and facilities being managed by Med-Systems Management. United Telemanagement was established to bill for ancillary hospital services, where Terry was CEO and Board Chairman. Terry went on to create and become CEO of Cost Recovery Corp., a traffic crash, structure fire and hazmat billing company, successfully bringing much-needed funds back to Police and Fire Departments' budgets, billing at-fault parties' insurance companies. He belonged to a multitude of professional groups for Police, Fire, EMS, Healthcare Philanthropy, Emergency Physicians, National Electronic Billing, Patient Records Management, and was a voting member for these and other Boards. His entrepreneurial spirit in all things creative always focused on designing products and services to improve others' health, welfare, and safety.
Terry Henley holds 11 patents in nine different fields. He never bragged about that, but we all do! He also created the long putter in 1979, which was eventually banned from play, a self-serve mixed drink machine, the "DrinkMeister," a life-size Jenga game before that was a "thing," and an economically driven game board to build entrepreneurial skills, among a gazillion other fantastic things. He could never get enough education. His research of all things pertaining to personal health, engineering, nursing, nanotechnology, fire prevention, psychology, neurology, sociology, and hundreds of other disciplines made him able to speak on most any topic. And he would!
Being a certified graphoanalyst, Terry used his caring approach to help people in their worst of times. There are so many stories of him analyzing a person's handwriting, engaging in conversation with them, and being able to guide them toward care for health issues, suicidal tendencies or other concerns. His 1978 published book, "The Freudian I" utilizes angles and measurements of the personal pronoun "I" to discern personality concerns, health status, as well as parental influence in the first year of a child's development. It is still widely sought today in CGA and is a cornerstone in using Freud's psychoanalytical theory for personality interpretation in handwriting.
Terry always showed compassion for people and loved helping them achieve their best. His focus on kids and sports has had a huge impact on thousands of youths, with him coaching baseball and soccer teams around Midland Michigan and Louisville, Kentucky, and most recently coaching basketball and golf in Beavercreek and Casstown, Ohio.
One of Terry's proudest visions was creating the Beavercreek Stars Youth Basketball Program for 3rd-6th grade teams, including being able to coach his sons, Barron and Troy during the early days of the program. He founded it in 1975, personally funding the entire operation, including building a full-size gymnasium. His teams couldn't get practice time at local gyms, so he built Henley Hall in Alpha, Ohio! He never backed down from a challenge and that drive has led to today's Stars, considered a premier youth basketball program of over 75 teams for girls and boys, grades 2-12, with Regional and National recognition. His philosophy of providing skills training over just winning gave the kids the foundation for discipline, great skills sets, sportsmanship, team-building and overall life skills. He was inducted into the Beavercreek Athletic Hall of Fame because of his continued influence on the high school's basketball programs.
In honor of Terry's dedication to the Beavercreek Stars and Henley Hall, The Terry Henley Memorial Scholarship will be given annually to a Beavercreek graduating senior who played for the Stars program. Mrs. Pat Holden has graciously worked on Terry's behalf, and we are grateful his vast legacy will live on in this way. After moving to Elizabeth Township, Ohio in 1991, Terry designed and helped build our home. He got so much joy from working on our wooded properties and refurbishing the pre-1830 house next door (verified as a safe house on the Underground Railroad), and succeeded in making ours the most unique home around. Being in Viking Country, Terry was asked to coach the 2012-2019 Miami East JV and High School Golf Teams. Coach's teams benefitted from his analytical approach to their swing plane, setup for putting and his amazing gift of immediately seeing any bad habit in their approach to the golf ball. He taught muscle memory and persistent use of a proper setup, and all the guys knew they could count on him for golf or any life lessons needed. They all could count on him having an ample supply of Oreos, too! He advanced the teams' standings, loving every minute with the players on the teams, and had the honor of coaching his son, Walker, as a District contender in 2017. He continued coaching basketball and golf skills to many, many students and adults over the last decade.
