Sylvia Coleen Ford Kirby, 88, of Edom, Texas, passed away on October 11, 2025. She was born on May 12, 1937, to Charles Dalton Ford and Martha Marie Ford.
Sylvia was a proud graduate of Van High School, Class of 1955, and went on to attend Tyler Business School and Tyler Junior College, where she developed the skills that guided her through a long and meaningful career.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, J.M. Kirby. She is survived by her son, James Marcus Kirby, Jr.; her grandchildren, Shelbi Chambers and husband Uriah, Sidni Carruthers and husband Travis, and Dalton Kirby and wife Casi; and her great-grandchildren, JoLea, Ezlyn, and Charles Jase Chambers, Pierce, Lewis, and Sunny Carruthers, and Hazel, Hayden Martin, and P.J. Kirby. She is also survived by her brother, Keith Ford and wife Kathy, and a host of nieces and nephews.
A lifelong member of Edom United Methodist Church, Sylvia sang in the choir, held many church offices, and volunteered regularly. She was also a proud 30-year retiree of the Texas State Rehabilitation Commission, where she dedicated her career to helping others.
Sylvia's later years were brightened by the love and care of her bonus son, Randy Clearman, who became not only her caretaker but a cherished member of her family.
Those who knew Sylvia will remember her for her constant expressions of love and devotion to her family. Known affectionately as Mama Kirby by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she surrounded herself with family photos and memories, ensuring that love was always at the center of her home.
Visitation will be at 9:30 am on Thursday, October 16, 2025, with funeral services to follow at 10:30 am at Edom United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Bullard Cemetery, under the direction of Hilliard Funeral Home.
