Sylvia Jean Johnson passed away peacefully, surrounded by her devoted family, on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, after an extended illness with cancer. She was born 83 years ago in Duluth, Minnesota, attended Duluth Public Schools, and graduated from Duluth Central High School in June 1957. Sylvia then married her high school sweetheart JB Johnson and together they had two boys and two girls. She then moved, with her husband and family, to Maryville, Tennessee in 1970. After the four children married and moved from home, she and her husband, JB, moved to Knoxville, TN in 2019.
Sylvia had a servant's heart and dedicated her life to raising her four children as well as enjoying her eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was a servant of the Lord and was dedicated to Lakeside Bethany Lutheran Church, Duluth, MN, Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, Maryville, TN, and Peace Lutheran Church, in Knoxville, TN as an active member. Sylvia lived by the Golden Rule and always put others before herself. Even in the final stages of her life, she wanted to make things easier for others.
She is predeceased by her parents, Chester and Marion Morterud; sister, Marge; brother, Bill, and oldest son, Richard. Sylvia is survived by her husband of 65 years, JB Johnson; daughters, Cynthia Manis, and Tamara Sturm; son, Thom Johnson; grandchildren,
Emily (Nathan) Pandolfi, Lilly Johnson, Jason and Ashley Manis, Frank and Heidi Sturm, Rikki and Olivia Johnson; great-grand child, Opal Jean Pandolfi; daughters-in-law, Karen Johnson and Erika Johnson, and son-in-law Gary Sturm.
There will be a joint Memorial Service between Saint Paul's Lutheran Church and Peace Lutheran Church for Sylvia at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, 429 Sandy Springs Rd, in Maryville, on June 29, 2022, at 11:00a.m. She will be interred in the church columbarium during the service. In lieu of flowers, The family requests donations be made in Sylvia's memory to ministries of either Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, 429 Sandy Springs Road, Maryville, TN, 37803 or Peace Lutheran Church, 621 N Cedar Bluff Rd, Knoxville, TN 37923.
