Sylvester Duke Fulmer
A Wonderful Father
Born in 1907 Sylvester Fulmer grew up in Cincinnati near Mt. Airy Forest. His formal schooling ended at the 8th Grade, when he was forced to drop out of school to help earn money for his large family of brothers (4) and sisters (4). During his life he worked a series of odd jobs, but the one he loved best was working on the railroad. Drafted in 1942, he served in the U.S. Army in World War II and fought in the European Theatre. He was discharged in 1945, and returned to the U.S. eventually taking a job in a factory, and losing four fingers on his left hand when the press that he was working malfunctioned, and came down twice before he could remove his hand. After that he worked as a security guard, and eventually retired in the late 1960s. Married three times, he fathered four children and helped raise two step children. After marrying his third wife in the 1950s, he lived for the rest of his life in Norwood Ohio, where he raised his 3 children and 2 stepchildren. In his retirement he enjoyed painting landscapes with oils, telling stories, reading the newspaper, gardening, and enjoying sitting on the front porch or patio with his wife Gertrude. He was a loving father and grandfather, and adored his children and grandchildren. He survived his wife Gertrude by five years, and passed away in February of 2004 at the age of 96.
