Suzanne von Bernuth Nelson passed away peacefully at her home in Charleston, South Carolina on February 8, 2022. She was the daughter of Alma and William Steinway von Bernuth and sister to Madeleine von Bernuth Pollitzer.
Suzanne was born on March 23, 1923 in Lafayette, Indiana, and grew up in Westchester, New York. Before she was married, she was employed as an executive assistant with Time magazine. Thereafter, she married William Blaikie Nelson and had a daughter Michele Madeleine Nelson. They resided in the Bay Area of California until her husband's retirement in 1981 when they moved to Beaufort, South Carolina to be close to extended family. Sue was an avid animal lover and was a lifelong advocate for animals of all types, especially dogs.
In addition to her daughter Michele, Sue is survived by her granddaughter Lecian Suzanne Dehbozorgi (Scott), two great grandchildren, a grand nephew, a niece Suzanne Pollitzer Merck, and a nephew Richard Guerard Pollitzer Jr., and his family. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill, and nephew William Stratton Pollitzer.
Sue was a remarkable individual who will be sorely missed.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to any animal advocacy organization. Sue's favorite animal charity was Best Friends Animal Society.
