Susanne Sisson Whitesides passed away peacefully on the 23rd of June 2021 after an extended hospitalization. A 1966 graduate of Waterford High School, she was employed as an aide at a nursing home and as a dental assistant in the local area after high school. In 1969 she met her future husband, Walter, who was a student at Southern Connecticut State College. After a whirlwind courtship they were married in August 1970 and lived in New Haven. After graduation from college in 1973, Walter was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. Their daughter, Erika, was also born that year. During his Marine Corps career, they lived in Quantico, Virginia; Okinawa, Japan; Camp Pendleton, California; Monterey, California where their twin sons Daniel and Gregory were born; Quantico, Virginia (again); Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii; and finally in Northern Virginia. After Walter's retirement from the Marines, they elected to stay in Northern Virginia. Sue worked as a medical biller and medical receptionist for several doctors until she retired in 2009. They moved back to Waterford in June 2019. They loved to travel and she had been to 48 states and 24 countries on four continents. Over the past few years, her health had started deteriorating due to chronic arthritis resulting in three surgeries on her back and several bouts of pancreatitis. She loved nature, the beach, and her family. Susanne was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Emily Sisson; two brothers, David and Gary Sisson; and her daughter Erika. She is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Walter, and their sons Daniel and his family, wife Jennifer and children Ami and Andrew; and Gregory and his family, wife Michele and children Devon, Lillian, and Erik; and her brother Donald Sisson.
