DeBartolo (Aug. 19, 1963 - July 13, 2022)John Watterson Sr. passed away in the early morning of July 13, 2022, at home surrounded by his loving family and his cat Toby. His significant other of 27 years, Susan "Sue" DeBartolo passed away at home in the evening of July 13, 2022, with her loving daughter Angela, Angela's boyfriend Rich and Chaplain Parise by her side. John and Sue met in the summer of 1995, their first date at Ocean Beach. After that first date, they both knew they were each other's soul mate. John and Sue fell in love instantly and were engaged by the following year. Sue worked as a hair dresser at the Hair Garden in Norwich, before she was unable to work any longer in 1997, due to her disease progression of multiple sclerosis. Throughout her disease progression, John took care of Sue, ensuring she was able to stay at home, until she had caregivers at home starting in 2009. Sue never let her disease of MS control her life, and always maintained a positive outlook and attitude. Sue was a wonderful mother and grandmother, talented seamstress and made the best baked stuff shrimp you would ever taste.John worked as a Connecticut State trooper and then as a corrections officer for 25 years at Janet York Correctional facility before his retirement in 2016. John was an electrician by trade, and was able to fix absolutely anything you put in front of him. His talents didn't stop there. He was an artist who loved to oil paint, amateur radio enthusiast, talented singer, bass guitarist, piano player and member of "The Renegade Band" with his closest friends, even recording and making albums. They are survived by three children; John Watterson, Heidi Watterson and Angela Talley; grandsons, Brandon Watterson and Michael Watterson; and the light of their lives, their granddaughter Ella Talley. Sue is survived by her sister Deb Barber; as well as two nieces, Cate Blair and Alexandra Hughes. The biggest thank you goes to John and Sue's caregivers, especially Sue Jones and Anastasia Joyner who became family and cared for Sue for over ten years and John in the last several months of his life.Even though they are no longer here with us, their story is one of true love. They are forever soulmates, finally free from their illnesses and dancing in Heaven together for eternity, watching over the ones they loved most. John and Sue were avid cat lovers, rescuing many cats throughout their lives. In their honor, consider donating to the CT humane society or give a furry friend their forever home.Family and friends are invited to gather at 11 a.m. Friday, July 22, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 10 Huntington Street, New London, for a Mass of Christian burial.
