Susan Carol "Sue" Sands, 71, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and dear friend passed away Sunday, September 9, 2018 at Three Links Care Center due to complications of diabetes.
She was born December 26, 1946 in Red Wing the daughter of Novel "Sonny" and Elda (Buchholz) Fossum. Sue graduated from Goodhue High School prior to attending the University of Minnesota. She completed her education at Concordia University, St. Paul where she received a Bachelors Degree with a major in Organ and Music. Sue married Ray Sands Dec. 12, 1970 at Holden Lutheran Church. She spent her life sharing her incredible talent as a musician: writing, arranging, teaching and performing various genres of music. In addition to being church organist for 58 years (starting at the age of 13), she taught music at Lourdes High School, Goodhue High School, Kenyon-Wanamingo High School, as well as private piano lessons. Sue enjoyed performing with many groups: The Polka Dots, Julie Lee's White Rose Band, The Riverbend Dutchmen, Whoopee John, The Ray Sands Combo, The Added Touch Singers, Bill, Brad, & Susan, Anonymous, Sisters, Simply Classic Trio, Sweet Dreams, Davidson Trio, Three's a Chord, church choirs and more. She truly made life harmonious for so many.
Sue was a member of Holden Lutheran Church and a member of Goodhue Lioness Club. Sue cherished spending time with her precious grandchildren. She also enjoyed shopping, trying new restaurants, traveling, driving the combine, attending polka festivals, interior decorating, and of course, music.
Sue will be lovingly and forever remembered by her husband, Ray; beloved daughters, Kristy (Matt) Jacobson, Heidi (Mik) Gusenius; grandsons, Bryan, Colin, Rylan; granddaughter and namesake, Marika "Mari" Sue; mother, Elda Fossum; brother, Robert "Bob" Fossum and many special family friends including Laurie (and Randy) Redding.
She was predeceased by her father, Novel "Sonny" Fossum.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home, Kenyon on Thursday from 3pm to 7pm and at Holden Lutheran Church on Friday from 1pm to 2pm with special musical offerings starting at 1:30pm. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 14, 2018 at 2pm at Holden Lutheran Church with The Reverend Heather Culuris officiating. Interment will be in the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Aspelund. Memorials are preferred to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: 1711 Broadway Street NE, Minneapolis, MN 55413 or to the donor's choice.
